Margaret and Bruce
at the recycling center. |
In 1997 Margaret created the City’s Environmental
Management Office (now known as the Office of Sustainability and Environment)
to focus incentives and imperatives for better environmental performance
in every
city department.
She secured
the first
million dollars
for energy and water efficiencies in City buildings and facilities.
Today the City's auto and paint shops have regular environmental audits,
use of toxic pesticides in city landscape maintenance is dramatically
reduced, city fleets are being converted to cleaner fuels, and city purchasing
and construction contracts incorporate sustainability standards. Nearly
all the City’s large offices, shops and community buildings have
been retrofitted for water and energy savings.
