Clean Air. While Margaret was chair of Puget Sound Clean
Air Agency, it developed voluntary partnerships with petroleum refiners
to provide fuel formulas that help protect the region’s air quality
despite the failures of the federal regulatory scheme. Margaret had the
privilege of making a presentation about our Clean Diesel initiative
at the Johannesburg Sustainability Summit in September 2002.
Global Warming. As a founding participant in the Northwest Climate Change
Coalition, Margaret sponsored Seattle’s membership in the Cities
for Climate Change. We committed to clean fuels for the city’s
vehicles, insisted on full cleanup of emissions from the Centralia coal
plant, and documented our achievement of Kyoto greenhouse-gas reduction
goals.
